 CO2 emissions

For 2010, the Group’s CO2 emissions totaled approximately 2.1 million tons, with the slight decrease over 2009 attributable to increased use of renewable energy which compensated for higher consumption attributable to increased volumes and the expansion in the scope of activities reported.

With regard to CO2 emissions per unit produced, in 2010 Fiat Group Automobiles (FGA) recorded an average 0.418 tons of CO2 per vehicle produced, representing an approximate 11% reduction over 2009 (0.470 tons of CO2/vehicle produced). Performance for 2009 is based on the same scope of activities as for 2010 and takes into consideration other significant changes occurring during the year.

CO2 emissions

The improvement was primarily attributable to the increased use of renewable energy (accounting for approximately 65%) and improvements in energy efficiency (approximately 35%). In view of new initiatives established and the significant results achieved in 2010, several Group Sectors (FGA, Fiat Powertrain, Teksid and Comau) have revised their existing CO2 emissions reduction targets for 2014, making them even more demanding.

The Group also increased the use of energy from renewable sources 11.8% in 2009 to 16.6%, in 2010 and aims to bring this level to around 18% in 2011, with specific targets for each Sector.

Energy consumption by source

Details and targets for each Sector

(1) Emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) other than CO2 have a negligible impact and therefore are not included (CO2 accounts for over 99% of the Group’s total GHG emissions).
(2) The figure for 2009 has been restated and, therefore, differs from that published in the 2009 Sustainability Report.
(3) The figures for 2008 and 2009, initially 0.523 and 0.457, have been adjusted to take account of changes in the scope of activities in 2010.
(4) Direct consumption from renewable sources is negligible (approx. 0.01%).
