Through the Streamlined Delivery Project (SDP), launched in 2001 by Fiat Group Automobiles (FGA), inbound flows have been contracted to a coordinated pool of logistics providers who organize the collection of material from a number of suppliers in order to maximize utilization of transport capacity and increase efficiency, compared with transportation by individual suppliers.
The project has since been implemented by several Group Sectors in Europe: at FGA, it already covers around 82% of volumes transported and these levels are expected to be maintained, even after introduction of new operating methods.
In Italy, for Fiat Powertrain, which have large numbers of widely dispersed suppliers, approximately 36% of cost of shipping in Europe is now covered by the project and there are plans to extend coverage to around 41%. In 2011, Magneti Marelli also plans to continue extension of measures identified to improve transport efficiency through increased capacity utilization.
In addition, in order to capitalize on potential synergies and increase utilization of transport capacity, a project for the centralized management of inbound flows was initiated, with extension of a transport management application to all Group Sectors.
The progressive expansion of these projects throughout the Group resulted in approximately 30,000 tons of CO2 emissions being avoided for the period 2008-2010.
