Adventures of our time
The lone navigator
Giovanni Soldini is anything but a rough, brusque sea dog. His open profile on Facebook, like the website maserati.soldini.it, contains video interviews, videos shot at sea and countless pictures.
He began sailing as a child and winning as a young man: at age 16, the trans-Atlantic race A.R.C., and in ’91, the Baule-Dakar, sailing solo. Soldini soon became a legend for sailing enthusiasts and an example of courage and generosity, with celebrated rescues such as that of sailor Isabelle Autissier. Fame and recognition came his way: in 2000 the French Legion of Honor, in 2002 Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and, in 2008, the Gold Medal for Merit of the Italian Navy. Fair winds, Giovanni!
A record with a long history
The year was 1848: a man named John Sutter was building a sawmill near Coloma, on the Californian coast, when he discovered a gold deposit. Despite attempts to keep it secret, the story was leaked. The result was collective madness. Hundreds of caravans of desperate gold-seekers set out from the East Coast of the United States. They left with nothing and brought nothing to their destination. They needed everything: kitchens, utensils, livestock, tools. And there was only one way to get them there: by sea. Yet Cape Horn stood in their path. New York’s shipbuilders adapted quickly, coming up with a new design for faster, safer and more efficient vessels. And so the clipper was born: three or more masts and more sail area than ever before seen.

Today onboard technology is a big help, Soldini explains: it allows time to be put to the best possible use. However, it is also true that, compared to the Flying Cloud's day, performance and limitations have made great strides.
